What to Look For in Solar Pathway Lights
Most buying guides tell you to chase the biggest lumen number. That's the one spec manufacturers inflate and the one that predicts longevity the least. Here's what to actually check, and why each matters.
1. Battery chemistry and capacity
Feature: Lithium (LiFePO₄ or Li-ion) vs. older NiMH; capacity in mAh. Advantage: Lithium holds more charge, survives more recharge cycles, and keeps working in the cold. Benefit: This is the #1 predictor of whether your lights last years or one season. Prioritize it above everything.
Look for: lithium chemistry, [CAPACITY, e.g. ≥600mAh]. Avoid unspecified "rechargeable battery."
2. Solar panel size and type
Feature: Panel surface area and cell type (monocrystalline > polycrystalline). Advantage: Bigger, better panels bank more energy in fewer daylight hours. Benefit: Reliable brightness even after cloudy days and through short winter days.
Look for: monocrystalline, [PANEL SPEC]. A tiny panel is a red flag no matter how bright the LED.
3. IP (waterproof) rating
Feature: Ingress Protection rating, e.g. IP65, IP67. Advantage: Higher rating = better sealed against rain, snow, and sprinklers. Benefit: Lights that survive real weather instead of fogging up and corroding.
Look for: IP65 minimum; IP67 for snow/heavy rain climates. Ours are rated [IP RATING].
4. Build materials
Feature: Housing and stake material — plastic, stainless steel, die-cast metal. Advantage: Metal and UV-stable materials resist sun fade, cracking, and wind. Benefit: Lights that still look good in year three instead of yellowed and brittle.

5. Runtime (measured, not claimed)
Feature: Hours of light per full charge. Advantage: Honest runtime tells you if the path stays lit all evening. Benefit: No nasty surprise at 10pm when the path goes dark.

6. Brightness — in context
Feature: Lumens. Advantage: Enough light to see the path safely. Benefit: Pathway lights are for guidance, not floodlighting — more isn't always better, and high lumens drain the battery faster.
